I was blown away by this movie. I found it haunting in portraying the martyrdom of the feminine role, be it family or society as a whole. Pay attention to the three scenes in the stained glass panels at the end, when mature Isabel is standing behind the office. I think these are key to the symbolism of the story. Also reading the Hawthorne stories helps. I also enjoyed the acting and cinematography.
